上海交通大學是我國歷史最悠久、享譽海內外的高等學府之一，是教育部直屬并與上海市共建的全國重點大學。經過119年的不懈努力，上海交通大學已經成為一所“綜合性、研究型、國際化”的國內一流、國際知名大學。
十九世紀末，甲午戰敗，民族危難。中國近代著名實業家、教育家盛宣懷和一批有識之士秉持“自強首在儲才，儲才必先興學”的信念，于1896年在上海創辦了交通大學的前身——南洋公學。建校伊始，學校即堅持“求實學，務實業”的宗旨，以培養“第一等人才”為教育目標，精勤進取，篤行不倦，在二十世紀二三十年代已成為國內著名的高等學府，被譽為“東方MIT”�？箲饡r期，廣大師生歷盡艱難，移轉租界，內遷重慶，堅持辦學，不少學生投筆從戎，浴血沙場。解放前夕，廣大師生積極投身民主革命，學校被譽為“民主堡壘”。
新中國成立初期，為配合國家經濟建設的需要，學校調整出相當一部分優勢專業、師資設備，支持國內兄弟院校的發展。五十年代中期，學校又響應國家建設大西北的號召，根據國務院決定，部分遷往西安，分為交通大學上海部分和西安部分。1959年3月兩部分同時被列為全國重點大學，7月經國務院批準分別獨立建制，交通大學上海部分啟用“上海交通大學”校名。歷經西遷、兩地辦學、獨立辦學等變遷，為構建新中國的高等教育體系，促進社會主義建設做出了重要貢獻。六七十年代，學校先后歸屬國防科工委和六機部領導，積極投身國防人才培養和國防科研，為“兩彈一星”和國防現代化做出了巨大貢獻。
改革開放以來，學校以“敢為天下先”的精神，大膽推進改革：率先組成教授代表團訪問美國，率先實行校內管理體制改革，率先接受海外友人巨資捐贈等，有力地推動了學校的教學科研改革。1984年，鄧小平同志親切接見了學校領導和師生代表，對學校的各項改革給予了充分肯定。在國家和上海市的大力支持下，學校以“上水平、創一流”為目標，以學科建設為龍頭，先后恢復和興建了理科、管理學科、生命學科、法學和人文學科等。1999年，上海農學院并入；2005年，與上海第二醫科大學強強合并。至此，學校完成了綜合性大學的學科布局。近年來，通過國家“985工程”和“211工程”的建設，學校高層次人才日漸匯聚，科研實力快速提升，實現了向研究型大學的轉變。與此同時，學校通過與美國密西根大學等世界一流大學的合作辦學，實施國際化戰略取得重要突破。1985年開始閔行校區建設，歷經20多年，已基本建設成設施完善，環境優美的現代化大學校園，并已完成了辦學重心向閔行校區的轉移。學�，F有徐匯、閔行、黃浦、長寧、七寶、浦東等校區，總占地面積4893畝。通過一系列的改革和建設，學校的各項辦學指標大幅度上升，實現了跨越式發展，整體實力顯著增強，為建設世界一流大學奠定了堅實的基礎。
交通大學始終把人才培養作為辦學的根本任務。一百多年來，學校為國家和社會培養了20余萬各類優秀人才，包括一批杰出的政治家、科學家、社會活動家、實業家、工程技術專家和醫學專家，如江澤民、陸定一、丁關根、汪道涵、錢學森、吳文俊、徐光憲、張光斗、黃炎培、邵力子、李叔同、蔡鍔、鄒韜奮、嚴雋琪、陳敏章、王振義、陳竺等。在中國科學院、中國工程院院士中，有200余位交大校友；在國家23位“兩彈一星”功臣中，有6位交大校友；在18位國家最高科學技術獎獲得者中，有3位來自交大。交大創造了中國近現代發展史上的諸多“第一”：中國最早的內燃機、最早的電機、最早的中文打字機等；新中國第一艘萬噸輪、第一艘核潛艇、第一艘氣墊船、第一艘水翼艇、自主設計的第一代戰斗機、第一枚運載火箭、第一顆人造衛星、第一例心臟二尖瓣分離術、第一例成功移植同種原位肝手術、第一例成功搶救大面積燒傷病人手術，第一個大學翻譯出版機構，數量第一的地方文獻，國內第一位歐洲科學院人文社科院士等，都凝聚著交大師生和校友的心血智慧。改革開放以來，一批年輕的校友已在世界各地、各行各業嶄露頭角。
截至2014年12月，學校共有28個學院/直屬系，27個直屬單位，16家附屬醫院，全日制本科生（國內）15971人、研究生（國內）29895人（其中全日制碩士研究生13746人、全日制博士研究生6274人），學位留學生1869；有專任教師2823名，其中教授862名；中國科學院院士20名，中國工程院院士22名，中組部頂尖“千人計劃”1名入選中組部“千人計劃”94名，“青年千人”60名，“長江學者”特聘教授和講座教授共130名，國家杰出青年基金獲得者107名，國家重點基礎研究發展計劃（973計劃）首席科學家35名（青年科學家2名），國家重大科學研究計劃首席科學家14名，國家基金委創新研究群體11個，教育部創新團隊21個，上海交通大學位列科技部“國家創新人才培養示范基地”。

科學研究與科技創新水平不斷提高。2014年，國家自然科學基金項目數和經費數連續五年全國第一。SCI收錄論文數等指標連續多年名列國內高校前茅，2013年度SCI收錄論文數4901篇，繼續保持全國高校第二；2004-2013年SCI收錄論文累積被引21694篇、234209次，繼續保持全國高校第三；“表現不俗”論文1922篇，上升至全國高校第二；在各學科期刊影響因子前十分之一的期刊發文達到686篇，上升至全國高校第二；作為第一作者發表國際合著論文1058篇，上升至全國高校第二；在四大名刊發表論文9篇，居全國高校第三；在中國科學技術信息研究所公布的153種各學科高影響力期刊中發文188篇，名列全國高校第三； 國內科技論文數7265篇，國內被引30177次，居全國高校第二。

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), as one of the higher education institutions which enjoy a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China, is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government. Through 119 years' unremitting efforts, SJTU has become a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized top university in China.
By December 2013, SJTU has had 28 schools/departments, 26 directly-affiliated institutions, 12 affiliated hospitals, with 16,099 undergraduates and 27,921 postgraduates (13,345 master degree candidates and 6,287 doctorate degree candidates). SJTU enjoys an increasingly high scientific research level and technology innovation level. Since 2013, SJTU has ranked first for four consecutive years in terms of the project number and the amount of money issued by National Natural Science Foundation of China. The number and other indexes of SCI papers of SJTU rank among the top for years, with 4,146 SCI papers in 2012 remaining the second among all the universities in China. The total number of SCI-cited papers from 2003 to 2012 reaches 23,655, with 171,550 times of citation, which keeps ranking the third in China. 1,041 papers were regarded as "doing-a-good-job" papers, ranking the third in China. 409 papers in different fields were published on journals whose Impact Factors are among the top 10 percent, ranking the fourth in China. 753 co-authored papers with SJTU as the first-author affiliation were published on international journals, ranking the third. 4 papers were selected in the "100 most influential international academic papers in China 2012", ranking the third. 7,650 sci-tech papers were published domestically, with 34,028 times of citation nationwide, remaining the first in China. 231 papers were published on SSCI and A&HCI journals, ranking the third among all the universities in China.
